Gifted Seminar 2012 -2013 will be offered approximately twice per month usually on a Tuesday and Wednesday to take advantage of the two day cycle. Each Seminar's content will be offered during multiple periods on each day so that students may select a period that creates the least disruption to their academic class work. Seminar dates will be posted here, on the Announcement Board outside the "Gifted Wing," and communicated via BASH TV and student email.
+Attendance is a requirement as a part of the Gifted Program and should take precedence over other events.
+ If you will be missing Gifted Seminar you should:
- notify Mr. Guenther in advance when it is known beforehand.
- See Mr. Guenther to determine what was missed, either before or very soon after the absence
- Plan to sit in on a different day’s session when appropriate and cleared through Mr. Guenther
+ Goals for the year were included on your GIEP
+ Students will need to sign up outside the Gifted Room for the period they wish to attend. Passes will then be distributed to students on the morning of the Seminar they are attending. However, if a conflict arises students may attend another session or arrange to meet with Mr. Guenther during 10-15 minutes of "free time."
+Seminars that require a Smartboard or the accommodation of large numbers will be held in Room 9 or Room 15 (Ms. Melchiorre). Sessions with just one or two students may meet in the Gifted Resource Room 42.
Session # 6 Apr 8, 9, 10 Personality/Interest Surveys - Career Choice - Enrollment [28/71]
Students completed online-based, personality-interest surveys to aid in determining career choices either before or during Seminar. (Directions sent to school e-mail account). We discussed the validity and accuracy of the surveys and students "evaluated the evaluation." An overview of BHS graduation and enrollment requirements were discussed (available on Enrollment page).

Session # 5 Jan 8, 9 College Colloquium - Return of the Gifted Alumni [29/71] Sixteen BHS Alumni returned (2012=10, 2011=2, 2010=4) to provide insight on the HS to college transition, HS course selection, college selection and more. Schools represented were: Grove City College , Gettysburg College, King’s College, Lafayette College, College for Creative Studies (Detroit),Bloomsburg University, Slippery Rock University, Widener University, University of the Sciences (Philadelphia), Pennsylvania College of Technology, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (Albany, NY), University of Miami (Florida)
Session # 4 Dec 11, 12 Formatting of Formal Papers - Sophomores [7/14] Discussed the need an use of formatting styles for formal papers, discussed basic differences between MLA and APA styles, and tips for getting them right (minimizing mistakes to avoid the loss of points). Sophomores are to submit a two-page paper with proper format including in-text citations and Works Cited or Reference page. This fulfills a GIEP goal for Sophomores. Juniors and Seniors were welcome to attend.
Session # 3 Nov 12,13,14,15,16 Resume Amnesty Day and/or Resume Evaluation and Improvement [20/50]
Choose a class period to come to the Gifted Room to complete your General Resume, Focused Resume (or both) and/or to complete the Resume Evaluation activities from Seminar #2. See description below. Passes have been distributed to all students via homeroom. NOTE - students may ask for a pass at any time to come to Gifted Room to complete the long overdue resume assignment. Session # 2 Oct 23, 24 Resume Evaluation and Improvement [25/50] "You never get a second chance to make a first impression." Your resume introduces you to a prospective employer, scholarship committee or college admissions personnel. Learn how to make your resume more effective in conveying your best traits and making further opportunities available to you. Resume Discussion questions were distributed before Seminar (Monday), reviewed in Seminar utilizing student sample resumes as examples. Students are to evaluate two resumes (their own plus one sample, or two samples from packet). See Mr. Guenther for materials to complete on your own if you could not attend a Seminar session on Tuesday or Wednesday.

Session # 1Oct 2, 3 Critical Thinking and "The Big Test" - PSAT/SAT Strategies__ [26/50] Critical thinking is a type of problem solving applied to an obstacle or hurdle standing in the path of accomplishing a goal. On the path to college, the SAT is one such hurdle. Students need a proactive approach in order to maximize their performance. Discussion focused on a broad approach to the PSAT/SAT, differences between the tests and links to more specific information, strategies and practice sites.
